Some of the new abilities that the ants gain feel ridiculous, even for this world and I would find myself getting aggravated when a cliffhanger would be ignored in the next episode in order to spend way too much time on a battle that I didn't care to see in the moment. I needed to know who would survive, I was excited when some of the ants turned against the king, I was scared for the lives of the new characters that I was starting to become attached to. By the time the king is born and cracks open the head of a sobbing little girl, I wanted to see them all die. Seeing ants harvest new humans for consumption or break off on their own to sneak in a "quick snack" by eating new characters that you were deceived into thinking would make up the new cast, was particularly grisly. Watching new ants come into the world bearing the features of the animals and people that their queen had devoured was a weird mix of silly and terrifying that I hadn't experienced before. Yoshihiro lets you know he's not fucking around anymore right out of the gate by introducing two preschool-aged children, a brother and sister, only to have them horrifically eaten by a giant anthropomorphic ant as she crunches through the head of a little girl and moans about the delicious taste of human flesh. Hunter x Hunter wasn't afraid to break up it's cute and happy world on occasion to remind the viewer that death was all around, but it never drank it in quite like this arc does. My viewing habits for Hunter x Hunter completely changed when the Chimera Ant arc began. HxH was more of a "watch a handful of episodes here and there", forget for a few weeks then come back to it. LOST, Prison Break and Dexter were built around this kind of viewing, they had me completely hooked even as they started to decline in quality.

That doesn't speak to the quality of a series by the way. With the brief exception of some of the Phantom Troupe story, I never felt that "oh shit, I need to see the next episode immediately!" with HxH. I love what I'm seeing and though there is no urgency behind the story, I soak in my time with it and appreciate it's beauty- Carole & Tuesday is a solid example of this, but the majority of Hunter x Hunter was this for me. Obligation viewing was pushing myself through the second half of the Buu Saga, through the most of the story-lines in 2003 FMA that started getting introduced around episode 20, the slog that was most of Naruto Shippuden and it's atrocious pacing.

There are three ways that I watch anime: obligation viewing, enjoyment viewing and addiction viewing. Just some likable kids learning about themselves and how they can push themselves further. No silly power levels, no floating "god-like" power-ups, no random mech-like transformations that filled the screen. I started to appreciate how strong the world-building was, how the creator would put his characters in seemingly impossible situations only the then write them out of them by implementing a creative use of an ability that was explained 10 episodes prior. I was originally frustrated that Hunter x Hunter didn't "blow my mind" the way some had promised it would and I stopped feeling resentful that it didn't hit me emotionally the way even some of the most flawed shonen were able to. After some cute and simple set-up, I found myself fondling remembering the more creative puzzle-solving moments and tournament arcs in early Dragon Ball and Naruto. Thanks to some of you who posted about it in the place that has now become a forum for alt-right goons, I started watching Hunter x Hunter back in 2014 when I realized it was on Netflix. Got swept up in the Bleach and Death Note crazes but fell out of love with those series as they progressed further. I fell in love with Cowboy Bebop when it first hit Adult Swim, loved the first half of the 2003 attempt of FMA, forced my way through through the good and the bad of Dragon Ball Z, GT, Naruto and Shippuden. My first anime was the original Dragon Ball, not counting the licensed anime that Nickelodeon aired in the 80's.
